Some of these were and continue to serve as the entrance gates of the settlement. The arcades of Ano Syros indicate and enhance its directly fortification character. In today’s era they may be elegant entrances, exits, but from their original creation, they were created for reasons of defense towards the enemy. They are created as an extension or concatenation of the residences, shortening even more the already small-diameter alley, while they often give the feeling of a labyrinth or tunnel, increasing the feeling of the unknown towards their other side. Very often they lead to a wall, creating sensations of entrapment or disorientation. They are often met with small windows in the upper part so that each residence can defend himself against the enemy.  Even their low height in a variety of cases forced the rider on horseback to continue on foot. It is obvious, therefore, that even today they have a different kind of utility, as they enhance the interest of the walker to explore the settlement.

Another special element of the settlement of Ano Syros is the customary law concerning the organization of the built space through the application of customary rules of individual ownership. It was established with the influence of the Frankish Law and for Ano Syros, it concerns the institution of residence ownership. “Due to the intense and timeless presence of the religious element in Ano Syros, the ecclesiastical features and events, as they are reflected in the area, were also recorded, with the aim of supplementing and saving the physiognomy that they give to the settlement as elements of intangible cultural heritage. Religiously, Ano Syros is divided into two parishes, the parish of Saint George and the one of Saint Sebastian, as depicted on the map through the boundary recorded. Another key element is the processions, which turn the settlement on Good Friday into a beacon of the divine message. Through a common process of Catholic and Orthodox churches and the participation of the inhabitants, the settlement creates temporalities, identities and routes.  These routes were depicted on a map with the aim of preserving them, in the subsequent course and urban development of the settlement. We observe that the longest route is followed by the litany of Saint George, which in many places is common with the litany of the Capuchins Monastery. Saint Sebastian follows a smaller litany in the southern part of the settlement, while the routes from all three processions follow the path of \u201cPiatsa\u201d, highlighting once again its significance for everyday life and celebration of religion, but also its identity. It is also interesting that the processions are intertwined at the boundaries of the two parishes, as are its religions, its people and its society.”

<\/td>		“The Piatsa is the central point of organization of public space in Ano Syros. It starts from the area where the social clinic was housed and extends to the end of this road. It is organized by small neighborhood shops, restaurants, exhibition spaces, while around the Vamvakaris Museum and the Museum of Professions is located, with an archive of Ano Syros. Finally, \u201cPiatsa\u201d housed the Ano Syros public service, before the implementation of the “Kallikratis” program that merged the Municipalities of Ermoupolis and Ano Syros, while today some responsibilities remain to serve the Apanochorites. In the \u201cPiatsa\u201d there is the mini-market of Ano Syros, which is the only supply store. During the summer months in this main street, a number of concerts, exhibitions and cultural events of memory and continuity are organized. Around the 1950s, the first restaurants began their operation, while over time Piatsa had been a place of meeting, music, social events and a male-dominated space. It has always been organized as a point of public life. It was a shrinking small community, with the main character being the male presence and a space of Dionysian expression (Stefanou, 2014), in which public speeches and decisions were given. It was and remains to this day a place of conciliation and exchange and is one of the landmarks of Ano Syros. Its extensive passage and its linear course organize its uses, determining its direction and course.  Regarding its social and cultural profile, this is completed with the cultural association it has, the football team, the television and radio station (Aegean FM), the help team at home, its own CARITAS (welfare) and recycling actions (Stefanou, 2014).”

The island of Syros has a direct connection with the myth of Apollo, who was born in Delos. Apollo, the solar God, rises every morning from Delos, where on the day of the vernal equinox the sunrise of light can be seen only from Syros, defining Syros as the recipient of Apollonius light. Besides, Syros took its name from the demigod Syros, son of Apollo and Sinope.
The place has temporality, so the physiognomy is not only spatial but also temporal forms, such as history, people and their works and all the elements of human behavior that have reached our days and are expressed in the same places (Stefanou and Stefanou, 1995). Ano Syros has a number of cultural resources of materials and intangibles, which are its physiognomic units.
The sunlight and the pulsating wind in the alleys complete the tactile landscape of the settlement.

\"\"<\/a><\/td>		A significant physiognomic element of Ano Syros is the Fifth fa\u00e7ade, that is, the terraces that due to its geomorphology , as well as the amphitheatrical placement of the buildings, are completely visible. Due to its fortification structure and the methodical construction of one residence in contact with the next, as well as the communication of two residences, Ano Syros has created a special form of building. In the past, most of the buildings communicated with interior doors for means of escape in case of possible raids. Still the rooftops communicated with each other for an easy escape. The rooftop terrace, however, was also an everyday role of interaction. The rooftop terrace of one house was the courtyard of the other according to the rules set by customary law. It was an autonomous courtyard, a place of play, conciliation and individual views of each residence. Over the years, many perimeter terraces were built that cut off the entrance of the adjacent house on the rooftop terrace and a number of arbitrary constructions, such as pergolas, were presented cutting off the view. \"\"<\/a><\/td>		The typesetting of its physiognomy is complemented by the landscapes of the settlement (acoustic, odorous, tactile, etc.). Initially, the soundscape of the settlement is found in the folk music tradition, with a multitude of folk and rebetika songs, as they were created with the axis of Markos Vamvakaris, up to the Latin psalms and collective prayer. The voices, the laughter, the songs, but also the bell were signifiers of the joyful, sad and hopeful message for the settlement of Chora. The sunlight and the pulsating wind in the alleys complete the tactile landscape of the settlement. The landscapes of Ano Syros are complemented by the delicious landscape of pleasant (basil, jasmine) and unpleasant smells (garbage dumps), but also the smells of Syrian cuisine, compose a delicious and at the same time smelling landscape, of remembrance and recognition.
